Have a Nice Summer! : )
I was all ready to let loose on the paper after seeing the headline “Collins remembered for his humanity over almost 26 years as Housing Authority director”.
Having worked with Richard Collins directly, I would say he is remembered for his not-so-subtle racism and being altogether unpleasant to be around.
I won’t spend any more time here speaking ill of the dead but I will point out that the headline, at least, is misleading.
While County Overseer Russ Abolt did use the word “humanity” that is not the overall impression one gets from the article.
Here is a sample of what folks say about him:
"He never lost sight of why he was there and what his job was."
"We're talking about a guy who was a strict professional,"
"He was very good at what he did,"
"Richard was someone you really had to get to know to appreciate his gifts,"
"He'll be a missed gentleman,"
There was one glowing obit moment from a housing authority board member but for the most part Richard Collins got the equivalent of “Have a Nice Summer” in the High School Annual of life.
In case you don’t remember high school, “Have a Nice Summer” is what you wrote when you had absolutely nothing to say or didn’t really know the person or, I guess, when you didn’t want to say they were an unpleasant ass.
